HEN is back!

Heritage Education Network (HEN) 7: How to discover your Local Heritage

This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunity is free for teachers and trainee teachers in West Norfolk. The event is fully funded by the Heritage Schools programme.

Historic England* in partnership with Norfolk Museum Service/Stories of Lynn and The St George's Guildhall and Creative Hub Project are delighted to invite teachers and trainee teachers from your school to a free CPD day. We invite you to explore ways of using local heritage in the classroom to inspire learning across the curriculum.

Tuesday 16 January 2024 from 9.30am to 3.30pm

Starting at St George's Guildhall, 29 King Street, King's Lynn, Norfolk, PE30 1HA

  • The day will start at St George's Guildhall where Jane Hamilton would like to invite teachers to come and discover their exciting new offer. The morning will include a tour of the venue, a session exploring the Guildhall's links to Shakespeare and invitation to consult with the team on the education offer, including cross-curricular links.
  • The walk to the lunch venue will be a chance to discover more of the town's rich heritage, looking at how to develop a Heritage Trail; and uncover the Lynn Shakespeare may have known.
  • Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.
  • The afternoon session will be at Stories of Lynn, where the team from Norfolk Museum Service will be looking at the offer here for local schools to inspire and support your teaching. There will be an opportunity to tour the Stories of Lynn venue, focusing on the significant moments in the town's past.
  • Kate Argyle from Historic England will look at how you and your students can use a range of sources - historic maps; built heritage and documents - to rediscover Tudor Lynn. We will look at developing disciplinary knowledge and using place-based learning across the curriculum. Everyone attending will receive a teaching pack of maps and photos of King's Lynn; find out how to gain a Heritage Schools Award and discover more free resources available online from Historic England and other Heritage organisations.

All schools that attend the HEN CPD day will receive:

  • A free copy of 'An Illustrated History of King's Lynn 1204 - Present' by Nicola Marray-Woods
  • A pack of historic maps and aerial photos of King's Lynn

In addition, state schools and academies can claim a contribution of £130 towards the cost of cover for one teacher, per school, who attends the event.

Book the CPD session on Eventbrite.
